Why do we care so much?

The other day I was sitting at a park bench, and I was by the games where kids play, and I just sat down and observed. I felt some sort of calmness seeing how free and happy those kids were; I felt some sort of calmness, which got me thinking about how much more we care about things when we get older. We also need to consider that we tend to care about things that we should not even care about. But at what age do we start to care about things we shouldn’t? I’ve heard that it is when we go into school and start comparing ourselves with other students in the classroom, or when we turn seven and our surroundings start to have more influence in our opinions than our own judgement. I don’t know what it is, but I believe that we get to a point where what we care about, let’s say during senior year of High School or Freshman year of University, is much more irrelevant even if we give more importance than we should. Let’s say, for instance, acting in a certain way or the impression we give others. I understand that it can be important, but why do we care so much about what other people think about how we act and who we are.

When I look back to when I was younger, I remember that the way I dressed or the way I acted was where I felt good about myself, even if I dressed in the goofiest way or acted silly. Now, I know you might be thinking that when we were younger, we didn’t know or understand enough about life, but we have a somewhat optimistic view of how the world is. We see people in a kinder way and without judgement. We see ourselves as the person we are and not exactly someone we want to be (without considering what we want to be when we grow up). I think that age when we are curious about different and unfamiliar is exhilarating. For some reason, when we get older, we worry and care so much about the negative outcomes and consequences that might arise from any given situation. For that reason alone, I believe that we should take our inner child a bit more often on a playdate.

And as my cousin told me, we need to stop caring so much about things that don’t matter. Just let things go and let the flow.
