The feeling of home

Last week I wrote about closing chapters and new beginnings. This week is a new beginning with my childhood surroundings, hometown, and how I was shocked at how easily I fit in. I realized that the moment I arrived, the way people acted and talked just felt relatable, and I thought that I somehow saw myself having a similar attitude.

So, as per usual, I was talking with my mom, and I told her: “This feels like home.” The people, the place, the surroundings, it just feels good. It then occurred to me that the place where we are born, the people we grow up with, our upbringing - the first years of our life - will be the people we will see more similarities with. The way we act and talk. For instance, my brother was born in another country, and we have different points of view and personality traits, while my mom and I were born in the same country, and we have very similar attitudes. So, can the country we are born and live in - at least for the first few years since we are born - shape our personalities and characters? Maybe; the famous zero-to-seven first years of our life theory.

But something is certain: the people you are surrounded by and the people you grew up with will make you feel at home whenever you are with them. They make you feel filled up with love and joy. Please consider that it doesn’t always have to be your direct family; maybe it is your chosen family, those you are close to enough to call your family.

The place you grow up in may have an impact on your character and may give you a perspective of how you are as a person. Coming back to the place where you know the people can help you remember who you are because we may sometimes get lost in this crazy world. So, don’t forget to sometimes look back and remember who you once were. Because maybe even back then, you were more authentic than you are now.
