Protagonist or Director?

The other day a thought came to mind, questioning why people say “be the protagonist of your life and not the director.” For some, being the protagonist of your life means you can show your skills and talents you were born with. And, another perception can be that we are our own storyteller and director. The difference is that one has a pre-established script and role to play, while the other has the power to change whatever they want. For starters, we have to understand who we are and believe in ourselves and be our first fan.

If we relate the word protagonist to the meaning of a movie, it means being the leading character and the most prominent figures in a situation. And being the protagonist of a film sounds great; it really does. However, that doesn’t mean that you are the one who decides who you will be friends with or what will happen to you because that has been pre-established by the director and producer. On the other hand, the director, who can also act in the movie, is the one who supervises and is in charge of something. They can be the one that controls the settings of a specific scenario, and the one that picks the characters to act because they have a vision. Considering that, a director can choose to be a protagonist, but a protagonist cannot choose to be the director.

Remember, I am comparing this analogy with a movie to explain a different perception of what role you want to play in your life. So, with that being said, do you want to be the protagonist (only)? The one who has everything planned out for them already and the script that they will dialogue. Or do you want to be the director, the one who has the opportunity to choose who the main character will be, which can be you, and the one who can plan out the script and scenarios of their life?
