Passion and profession

This week, my life had a 180 turn of events, ultimately shifting what I had planned for at least the following year.

My whole life (it hasn’t been that long), I had always planned my next move, feeling in control of what I could and couldn’t do. However, after this significant shift, the phrase or quote that came to mind was “everything happens for a reason,” and a friend then restated, “even if you try and plan things out, sometimes the universe or whoever you believe in will turn around and laugh.” And as I have become more spiritual in the past year, trusting that things will work out and that things happen for a reason started to go with the way I live my life. As I wrote in my previous article about trust and believing that things will work out, looking back at your past and what you have gone through helped me clarify that I will be okay in the end. But this shift helped define where I am going and what I want to do.

Then, another friend and I talked about passion and what we consider our passion in life. I concluded that our passion and profession are two in the same but very different. Our passion is what motivates us to keep on going. It is our end goal in life, what we want to leave behind and what we want to grow old with. However, our profession is the outlet of our passion. And what made me realize this was that I was comparing myself with those around me. I was trying to have the same passion as someone else, thinking that I would be able to feel fulfilled, but it didn’t. And it was only then that I also realized that our passion doesn’t exactly have to be our profession. I mean, it can be, but it can also be that feeling that motivates you to keep going when you are doing what you love to do, or even that curiosity to keep learning about life. For so long, I wanted to become this person, but wishing to become someone else pushed me away from who I truly am. And I think we feel pressured as teenagers and young adults to find what we will do for the rest of our lives. However, we have so much time to figure it out, and it is okay to change what we want to do. But it is our passion that keeps us on this path to figure out who it is that we are. Because by the end of the day, we want to know who we are and be fulfilled with what we are and what we are capable of giving to others. But that pressure that we feel blurs out our genuine passion, and I feel like the more you decide to put yourself out there, try new things and gain experience is what brings you closer to wherever you are meant to be.

So, I invite you to use this time, whatever time you want to find that profession that you can use as a tool and outlet to share your passion. It may be hard to separate the two, but allow yourself to slow down for a second and take some time to figure out what you want because that is what will lead you to your passion. Stop rushing things and enjoy the process because, as difficult as it may be, we just need to take a breather, let loose, figure out what works, and go with the flow.
