Closing chapters

We all know that saying goodbye is challenging, whether after seeing someone and then having to leave or even leaving a place knowing that you won’t see people or places in a while. The feeling we get when saying goodbye is sad because we feel that we are somehow detaching ourselves from whatever it is.

This week I am leaving for another country, and I am leaving behind many memories. The hardest part is saying goodbye, and it’s accepting that this chapter in my life is ending and that it is an opportunity for new beginnings. When I had told my friends that I was leaving, they would say: “go partying” or “take it all in because it won’t be the same over there.”

Well, the thing is, after I started this journey of mine, I realized that you don’t need a party to have closure or say goodbye, nor do you have to take it all in because it won’t be the same thing someplace else. Because the memories are already there, the people you met are part of who you have become, and the new place or wherever you will be will bring new memories. Those new memories will obviously not be the same, nor will the experiences and the people you meet. But that’s the beauty of it.

In a previous article, I wrote about uncertainty and doubt. But that is what is so exciting; not knowing what will happen or who you will meet is exhilarating. Now, I will say that I am scared sh*tless about what will happen, but I know that I will be okay and that is why I am so certain and calm that whatever does happen will be extraordinary.

Closing this chapter in my life is like putting all the memories in one box and knowing that whenever I want to relive it, I know it’s there to see and feel it once again. Saying goodbye to people was difficult, but having the opportunity to see the people I love the most before I go was incredible. I am genuinely grateful that I had that chance. And another thing I realized approaching the day of departure was appreciating every moment and every second that I live because nothing is forever. And knowing that not everything will be limitless allows you to enjoy and embrace things even more. Knowing that I have amazing people in my life and knowing that I have a place where I have created so many memories makes me smile. And closing a chapter means a new beginning, and that is simply amazing. It’s exciting!

Whenever we know that we are going to close a chapter, all these emotions start building up. The desperation for it to end or the stubbornness for it to be forever. The excitement of what may happen next or missing what we have going on at the moment. But, something inevitable, that even if we feel those emotions, only we know what is best for us. It is only us who know what we should do next and what we want. So, I invite you to embrace those emotions when you close a chapter, knowing that something new is coming. Knowing that even if something is uncertain, that we will be okay. So enjoy the life you are living because you never know how the next chapter in your life will be.
