Authenticity & Values

Who are we? What makes us, us? Is it our surroundings? Is it the people that are in our lives? Is it what we learn throughout life? Is it our values? Maybe it is just everything, isn’t it? I started questioning who I was while reading a book that my father gave me by Anthony Robbins called “Awaken the Giant Within.” The book talks about various topics and subjects that sparked an interest in me because, as you might know by now, I am a curious person, and if someone makes me question things, anything really, I am intrigued. So, as I was saying, the book talks about who you are as an individual, and it talks about how you can become the best version of yourself. But the real question, from the start was if I knew who I was to be able to reshape, transform or create new patterns to who I want to become or discover who I truly am. As I go back to my first question of who we are, I go to the first thing that pops up in my mind: what makes us different from everybody else? What makes us unique? What makes us authentic? These questions have different answers for everybody because everybody is different, but why? Why are we different? Why are we all not alike? Why do we have things in common with some people, and with others, we don’t? Oh, my! This seems like a philosophy class…

But, really, I mean, if we can answer these questions, will we be able to discover who we truly are? However, I do have to say that even if several factors do make us who we are, I do think that our values are what defines us in a way. We can describe what we like and dislike, what we want to do and be, but where do those values come from? Are they ours or are they from our surroundings - the people, the places, the education, the culture, where we grew up, our childhood? Maybe if we can redefine our values to make them truly our own by restructuring them based on our experiences, not based on other people, but what we truly believe, how would our values change? Would they be the same? Who knows? But let me put you to the test. Question if the values you have are truly yours. Question if the values that you have are the ones you want to live by, and question if you are truly authentic.
