Why is sex a taboo?

Why is sex considered such a taboo? It is entirely natural. However, society has made it into a dilemma and has forced people to label names to those actions in such conflicting ways… I mean, if a girl is a virgin, she is a prude, and if she has a body count of one or more, she is a slut; there is no in-between. If a guy sleeps with many women, he is considered a womanizer and someone to look up to, while a guy who is still a virgin is weak and pitiful. No girl or guy should be named such things because it reminds people of what they have or have not done yet, creating comparison and judgement. Considering that sex does sell, why are people still too afraid to talk about it freely? The songs, the movies, the books are portraying an insane image. Recognizing that it is a topic of conversation that focuses on fantasy, privacy, and something kept for consenting adults. According to the anthropologist Ernest Becker, “sex is such a problem because it reminds humans of their basic, core, animal nature.” Many decades ago, culture, family, and religion had moral values and beliefs that have created societal expectations (based on the experiences of families) and have been passed on through generations. In a 2019 article of Psychology Today, Let’s Talk About the Taboo of Sex: “the younger a child is, the more likely they are to view rules and concepts in terms of right versus wrong.” The beliefs that have been passed on to us will start to be questioned once we start realizing that we may have different points of view from our parents or even the people surrounding us. And the sooner the conversation to understand and approach sex and sexuality, the less likely someone will face the natural inclination to understand this topic or… worse yet, find a way to obtain mistaken knowledge.
